Why the purchase price misleads
A purifier that costs less up front but uses an expensive filter can cost more than a pricier unit within three years. This is the single most common expensive mistake in this category.
- Filters are consumables โ you will buy them again and again for the life of the unit
- Heavier use shortens filter life โ running 24 h in a smoky season can halve the interval
- Unavailable filters end the product โ if the filter is discontinued, the unit is scrap
How to use this result
Before buying any purifier, search for its replacement filter price and availability. If you cannot find one, or it costs more than roughly a third of the unit price, the running cost is high.
The calculator above uses 5 years by default because that is a realistic service life for a well-made unit with parts still available. If you change the filter on schedule, most units last that long.
