What actually matters in this category
RO vs UF
RO removes dissolved solids and heavy metals but wastes water and strips minerals. UF keeps minerals but does not remove dissolved contaminants.
Cartridge cost per year
The real running cost. Ask for the annual cartridge price before you buy the unit.
Storage tank size
Determines how much water is ready instantly. Too small means waiting after each use.
Installation footprint
Under-sink units need clearance. Countertop units need counter space and refilling.
Water waste ratio (RO)
Typical RO wastes 2–4 litres per litre produced. Check the ratio if water cost matters.

✓ Worth buying when
- Your tap water has a noticeable taste, odour or sediment
- You buy bottled water regularly and want to stop
- You live in an area with hard water or known contaminants
- You want control over what is in your drinking water
✗ Skip it when
- Your municipal supply is already clean and tastes fine
- You rent and cannot modify plumbing (a countertop unit may still work)
- You will not maintain cartridges on schedule — an unmaintained filter is worse than none
