What actually matters in this category

Control protocol

Wi-Fi needs no hub but congests your router. Zigbee and Thread need a hub but are more reliable at scale.

Colour rendering (CRI)

CRI above 90 for spaces where you read or work. Cheap strips render colours poorly.

Colour temperature range

2700K warm to 6500K daylight. Fixed-temperature strips limit how the room feels at night.

Power supply quality

The most common failure point. A branded driver outlasts the LEDs themselves.

Adhesive and mounting

Cheap adhesive fails within months. Plan on clips or channels for strips.

Buy if…

✓ Worth buying when

  • You want adjustable lighting for different times of day
  • You are setting up a workspace and need accurate colour
  • You rent and want lighting you can take with you
  • You want scenes rather than just on and off

✗ Skip it when

  • You want a simple bulb replacement — smart features add complexity for no gain
  • Your Wi-Fi is already congested with many devices
  • You will not use scenes or scheduling
