What actually matters in this category

CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate)

The single most important number. Aim for at least 3× your room volume in m³/h. A 50 m³ bedroom needs 150–200 m³/h.

Filter grade

True HEPA H13 captures 99.95% at 0.3 microns. H11 or 'HEPA-like' is noticeably weaker.

Quiet-mode noise

Under 30 dB for a bedroom. If the spec sheet omits it, be suspicious.

Replacement filter cost

Check before buying. If it costs half the unit price or is unavailable, running cost is high.

PM2.5 sensor

Useful but not essential — auto mode based on a cheap sensor can be worse than manual.

Buy if…

✓ Worth buying when

  • You live in an area with seasonal PM2.5 or smoke
  • Someone in the home has allergies or asthma
  • Your bedroom is sealed and you want overnight filtration
  • You have pets and want to reduce dander

✗ Skip it when

  • You keep windows open most of the day — filtration is wasted
  • The room is far larger than the unit's CADR rating
  • You only need odour control — a carbon filter alone may be enough
